Whole Leaves

Product 1:

The “king of crisp,” romaine is a perennial salad bowl favorite, and heirloom lettuces recall the myriad tastes and colors of salads before simple iceberg dominated the scene. These mature leaves of organic lettuce are hand-selected, washed, trimmed and ready to use — so it takes practically no effort at all to add a delicious salad to your meal…make a lettuce leaf a light low-calorie wrapper to fold around your snack…layer a toothsome green crunch onto your sandwich…or add beautiful color and good nutrition to just about any meal you like.

Why choose organic lettuces?

  • Like all leafy greens, lettuces can absorb impurities (like pesticides) that they’re exposed to as they grow — in fact, lettuce is #14 on the Environmental Working Group's “Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce,” a list of produce that carries the most pesticide residues when grown conventionally. You can lower your dietary exposure to pesticides substantially by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables, and choosing organic for those items instead.
  • When you choose Earthbound Farm certified organic lettuces, you can be sure your greens have been raised without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, using farming methods that regenerate the soil and protect the health of the land and the people who work on it.
  • WhatsOnMyFood.org from the Pesticide Action Network shows you searchable results for vegetables like lettuce and a wide range of other organic and conventional foods. It’s an easy-to-use, empowering tool for learning about pesticide residues and their health effects for all of us.

How to store washed whole leaves

  • Pre-washed and trimmed lettuce leaves in clamshell containers are highly perishable; always keep them refrigerated. After opening, store any leftover greens in their original containers, tightly closed. Be sure to consume them by the “use date” on the package. Discard leaves that look slimy, discolored, wilted, or smell bad.

Tips for using washed whole leaves

  • The beauty of washed whole lettuce leaves lies in how easy they are to use, with no prep and no waste. Tear them into a salad, lay them on a sandwich, or use them as low-calorie/low-carb wrappers for sandwich makings or other flavorful fillings — whole grain salads, veggies and spicy meat mixtures all work beautifully. Experiment and enjoy!
