A new study published in the journal Environmental Health has found that most Americans are ingesting a “rogue’s gallery” mix of toxic chemicals in their food, in amounts that violate government guidelines and put them at increased risk of cancer — and young children had the greatest exposures of all.

It’s hard to know for sure what these chemical exposures mean to individuals’ health, but the study’s conclusions are enough to raise concerns for both public health officials and parents.

According to the study, the greatest exposure to pesticides from foods came from:

  • Tomatoes
  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Peppers
  • Grapes
  • Lettuce
  • Broccoli
  • Strawberries
  • Spinach
  • Dairy products
  • Pears
  • Green beans
  • Celery
     

All but broccoli, pears and tomatoes are on the Environmental Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™, a list of the produce that carries the most pesticide residues when grown conventionally.
