A Chat with Charlie

Welcome to Earthbound Farm's new website and blog — and to being a part of the Earthbound community. Whether you know us primarily through our products, our website, our Facebook or Twitter communities, or our consumer contact team, I hope it's obvious that all of us who work at Earthbound are passionate about pursuing our mission to bring the benefits of organic food to as many people as possible and serve as a catalyst for positive change.

As a company, we've made a commitment to making organic salads, fruits, and vegetables affordable for everyone who wants them and it's rewarding to see that we're making good on that. Today, our products are often priced less than comparable non-organic items. But most days, they're approximately 15% (about 30 cents) higher, which we hope is a manageable difference. We believe everyone should have an opportunity to enjoy organic food.

In addition to farming organically, which has a much more positive environmental impact than conventional farming, we're always looking at ways to make every part of our business as environmentally positive as we can. Packaging is a big issue that we're constantly working on. Our latest move? Check out our new patented clamshell package for our salad. The top zips easily off and easily recloses. By getting rid of the shrinkband closure, we've reduced the amount of plastic in the package by 10% and now the entire package is made from 100% post-consumer recycled PET. We hope you like it as much as we do! Once you pick up a package, please let us know what you think by contacting us through this website or toll-free at 800-690-3200.

Thank you for your continued support of Earthbound!

New Plastic Container Design
By: Marilyn Matthews
Hi Charlie, I have been a devotee of your produce for several years and recently purchased some spinach packaged in the new design with the perforated lid. It's my opinion that this design is flawed because it does not retain the freshness of the produce for not even a short period of time. As a result, I will discontinue buying your product if you continue this packaging. I am sure that other customers have similarly commented. --Marilyn M.

Marilyn, thanks for letting us know about your experience. It's definitely not what we want happening, especially not to someone who calls herself a devotee! I'm really sorry that the spinach you purchased didn't stay fresh; however, I don't think it's the new package. You see, we had some unusual weather as we were transitioning from our fall growing region to our winter growing region, and it did seem to affect the quality of some of our greens. We had other comments along those lines, even before we started using the new package. That quality issue is clearing up now and I think you should see a difference in the product. The new package should actually help extend the freshness of our product, primarily because we don't have to send the packages through a heat tunnel to shrink the band seal. So, all in all, I hope you'll give it a try again. We'd like to be able to send you some coupons to replace the product that wasn't fresh, so I hope you'll contact our Consumer Relations staff either through our website (click on Contact Us in the right column or the top menu) or by calling then toll-free at 800-690-3200.
