![]() “Cooking for a crowd can bring out the ‘Iron Chef’ in all of us. I myself have had several of these culinary adventures. Having just celebrated another Thanksgiving brings back one of my favorite family food/adventure memories. “When I was a little girl, many of my relatives lived in Sacramento; my family would usually travel up there to celebrate Thanksgiving with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. One year we finally enticed everyone to come to our house in Carmel for the big day. In anticipation of a large crowd, my dad brought home a HUGE turkey — but when it came time to put the bird into our tiny oven, it wouldn’t fit! “Luckily the motel where my aunt and uncle were staying had a large oven, and so the beast was hauled off to be roasted there. When it was done, my dad and grandfather had to carry the turkey back through the neighborhood to our house. “I still remember their proud, beaming smiles as they came through the front door, like grooms crossing the threshold with a fragrant buttery bride. I always chuckled at the thought of our neighbors’ puzzled looks as the unusual Thanksgiving Day parade went by.” |
