![]() “My daughter, my grandchildren, and I were invited to my sister’s home for Thanksgiving dinner. We were bringing pies: pumpkin, chocolate cream, and custard. “By the time we arrived, cars were lined up in front of the house. The whole family was there. As we walked in the door carrying the pies, I could tell everyone was more than ready to eat — but they’d waited for me because I make the best gravy. I got right to work on the gravy as everyone pitched in to help place everything on the table. “Finally, we all sat down. After a short prayer of thanks, the food started around the table. We ate, we talked, and we ate some more. When it was time for dessert, I thought to myself, ‘All the work, all the time and energy we put into that meal, and it’s done before you know it!’ “Our pies were sitting on the counter. Someone brought my favorite blueberry, plus some cookies for the children. You know those little Italian cookies that are so yummy? I took one off the tray, I couldn’t wait! Anyway back to the pies: I started to cut the pies and placed the wedges on the platter. They all looked so good. As I was cutting and putting the pieces on the platter, someone would come and take the platter into the dining room to serve. I finished the pumpkin and the custard, and then I started on the chocolate cream pie. “It looked so pretty on the platter, with whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top for a little extra decoration. I turned around to hand the plate to my daughter, she took it — and the next moment, it was on the floor! “Now, everyone knows about the 5 Second Rule — at least, my daughter did. I was so quick to set that plate right that she just looked at me, smiled, and went in to set it at my place on the table, never saying a word. “With no more pies to slice, I joined the rest of the family in the dining room. I sat down and savored each bite of my floor pie! “Later, once everyone had finished and all was cleaned and put away, I shared what had happened in the kitchen. Every holiday since, the question has been, ‘Will there be any Floor Pie this year?’ |
